Vladimir Putin’s new targets in the Ukraine war are now “heat, water and electricity” as Russian troops further broke into Donetsk, Kherson and Luhansk in eastern Ukraine over the past 24 hours, officials said. Mr Putin has focused his “fury and his fire” on Ukrainian civilians, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said yesterday after the two-day NATO meeting. “Heat, water, electricity… These are the new targets of President Putin. He is hitting them hard. This atrocity of the people of Ukraine is barbaric,” the top US official said. The war is raging most fiercely in eastern Ukraine, where Russian troops have fired mortars, artillery and shells, signaling a new military offensive and prompting Kyiv to respond aggressively. The Donetsk region was the site of the heaviest fighting on Wednesday, with Russia shelling several towns, including Bakhmut, nearby Soledar and Opytne, the Ukrainian military said last night. Mr Putin’s troops have taken up defensive positions and trained tank, mortar and artillery fire on Ukrainian positions and the regional capital Kherson, they said. Show latest update 1669867554

Blinken says ‘barbaric brutality of Ukrainian people’

US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken has accused Vladimir Putin of focusing his “fury and fire” on Ukraine’s beleaguered civilian population, warning Moscow that its strategy will fail to drive a wedge among Ukraine’s supporters. “Heat, water, electricity… these are the new goals of President Putin. He hits them hard. This atrocity of the people of Ukraine is barbaric,” Mr Blinken told a press conference in Bucharest after the two-day NATO meeting. Western allies pledged support to Moldova, Georgia and Bosnia-Herzegovina yesterday at a meeting of NATO foreign ministers amid the threat from Russia, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg and ministers said. In response, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said NATO was “absolutely not interested in a political and diplomatic solution in Ukraine.” Arpan Rai December 1, 2022 4:05 am 1669865574
