Jakub Szymanski died at the hospital from his injuries about an hour after emergency services were called to an address at Miles Platting, Manchester, on Thursday night. His mother – known locally as Katarzyna Bastek – also underwent serious knife wounds at Bednal Drive. Ms Bastek, 40, was taken to hospital and is in stable condition. Jakub – known to his family as Kuba – has reportedly been attacked while trying to protect his mother. A 44-year-old man from Manchester, known to both victims, was arrested in Kent on Friday night on suspicion of murder. Detectives continue to question him. He was always a popular kid who made friends wherever he went because of his friendly and talkative nature. “He always said his opinion, he was a naughty, funny and cheeky boy. He loved the Xbox and its football, supporting Manchester City. “He was like any other teenage boy and he was useful to so many people, even those he just met. “For our family, he is our hero.” Chief Inspector Detective Alicia Smith of the Greater Manchester Police Incident Team said: “We are still investigating and last night’s arrest was a huge step to get a family that’s mourning the answers it so desperately needs.”
