It is understood that he intervened to protect Katarzyna Bastek’s mother when a man launched an attack.  Mrs Bastek, in her 40s, was injured and is recovering in hospital.  A 44-year-old man was arrested in Kent on Friday night on suspicion of murder, police said.

He was always a popular kid who made friends wherever he went because of his friendliness and of his conversational nature. “He always said his opinion, he was a naughty, funny and cheeky boy. For our family, he is our hero.” Police say the suspect is believed to have known the victims. Tonight (Saturday) he remains in custody for questioning. Detectives “work around the clock” after the incident on a property on Bednal Avenue. Investigations at the scene continued on Saturday, with the GMP saying police would be in the area throughout the weekend. A teenage boy who he had all his life in front of him he has tragically lost his life and not only is his mother mourning the loss of her son, but he is also recovering from what would undoubtedly be terribly traumatic. “We would also like to hear from anyone who has any information or anyone who may have seen anything.” Friends have set up a fundraising page to support his family.
